  • The Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce is reviewing whether the New Year’s Day polar plunge broke a Guinness World Record after more people than expected took the plunge. They will share more details about the record verification in the coming weeks (Guinness rules are very strict).  KAFE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington movie theaters must increase open captioning options after a new law went into effect on Jan. 1. The law requires theaters with five or more showings to offer at least two open-captioned screenings in the first two weeks — one held in the evening.  FOX13
  • WSDOT said a section of the North Cascades Highway west of Winthrop reopened for recreation after a two-week closure caused by mud and debris slides. The route from mileposts 171-178 is now clear while crews continue work on the nearby six-mile segment.  1170 KPUG

  • Whatcom County high school basketball teams ended New Year's Eve strong by winning trophies at holiday tournaments, with the Lummi teams seizing titles and the Lynden girls extending their win streak (57) as they prepare for upcoming games.  KISM
  • Three local high school basketball teams won trophies at holiday tournaments. The Lummi Nation teams secured titles at the Trojan Storm Winter Classic while Lynden girls captured the Christmas Classic crown (retaining a 57-game winning streak) as various games are scheduled for tonight.  My Bellingham Now
