EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tonya Hickman (elected in 2021) announced her resignation from the Lynden School Board on Jan. 8 in Lynden. Her departure is expected to be official before the Jan. 22 meeting.  Lynden Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Whatcom Land Trust finalized its $9 million purchase of 1,600 acres on Stewart Mountain on Jan. 7, expanding the forest to over 2,100 acres; state grants and donors funded the deal that will support tribal access, timber jobs and public recreation while a new nonprofit takes charge later this year.  KISM
  • The National Weather Service expects weak to moderate atmospheric river conditions to affect northwest Washington starting late Saturday and continuing through Monday night. Forecasts indicate that local rivers (Nooksack and Skagit) will remain just below flood stage as rain and melting snow boost runoff.  My Bellingham Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Whatcom County Public Works and Geosyntec consultants are holding three Jan. walk-in sessions for water adjudication questions. They meet Jan. 12 at Pioneer Pavilion in Ferndale from 11 to 1, Jan. 15 at the East Regional Resource Center in Maple Falls from 4:30 to 6:30, and Jan. 29 at Deming Library—no appointment needed.  My Bellingham Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • WWU Vikings (local team) split their basketball action last night as the men rallied from a 10-point deficit to beat Seattle Pacific 71-66 while the women lost 69-62 to Northwest Nazarene. The men will host Montana State Billings tomorrow night while the women travel to face Central for GNAC standings on the line.  KISM
