- ➤ Birch Bay’s polar plunge event attempted to break the Guinness record for Largest Polar Bear Dip but did not meet the record because participants did not dive deep and crowding in the plunge zones prevented accurate counts (organizers noted the turnout exceeded expectations and supported local business). - ➤ The Disaster Assistance Center returns to Nooksack Valley Middle School today from 6 to 9 p.m. to aid flood victims with document replacement, damage verification, and state disaster aid applications — while Whatcom County ends free debris drop-offs at Ferndale after this weekend, with charges starting Monday. - ➤ The Sumas community urged Whatcom County leaders to act quickly after December flooding during a Tuesday council meeting. Mayor Bruce Bosch requested a collaborative plan for the Nooksack River — including building a levee — with a full mitigation report expected in February or March. KISM
