CULTURE NEWS

  • Calvin University’s January Series of lecture and cultural arts presentations continues at 9:30 a.m. on weekdays through Jan. 30; group live viewings are available at Third Christian Reformed Church (Lynden).  Lynden Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Whatcom County's unemployment rate climbed to 4.6% in November from 3.9% in September, while the state rate reached 5%. County-level data for October has not been released due to the federal government shutdown.  KAFE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Coast Guard Auxiliary Bellingham and San Juan Islands Flotilla is offering an eight-hour online boating safety course to help locals earn the required Boater Education Card for safe water travel; class times vary (check the official schedule for details).  KISM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews began emergency repairs on Mount Baker Highway east of Glacier on Monday, Jan. 19 after historic flooding damaged two sections. Traffic will alternate between mileposts 41 and 44, and a five-day full closure is expected in early February.  KISM

HEALTH NEWS

  • PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center closed its main ER entrance yesterday for installation work (part of the Peter Paulsen Pavilion project) and directs patient drop-offs to the alternate entrance on Squalicum Parkway and Ellis Street, with extra parking available near the Fountain Building.  1170 KPUG
  • PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center closed its main ER drop-off entrance for construction until early February, so drivers starting Jan. 20 should use the entrance at Squalicum Parkway and Ellis Street — extra parking is available to the facility’s west and east sides.  KISM
