  • Construction has begun to transform a contaminated waterfront into Salish Landing Park with cleanup expected to last three years, while the Community Streets program invites submissions through March 31 for safety improvements — Whatcom Museum opens Free First Friday exhibits and the Central Library secures funds for a children’s renovation.  City of Bellingham

BUSINESS NEWS

  • CHS Northwest announced in a filing on Jan. 28 that it is selling its True Value hardware store in Lynden; 11 employees will be laid off beginning April 1 (the cooperative seeks a new owner focused on improving the retail experience).  1170 KPUG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than a month after severe flooding caused millions in damage, county agencies continue recovery by opening Disaster Assistance Centers, coordinating case management, and gathering damage data to secure further aid for residents locally.  KISM
  • Just over 1,600 water users in Whatcom County submitted adjudication claims as the May 1 deadline nears. The state Department of Ecology holds workshops and drop-in events at the Lynden Library on Feb. 18 and 25 (which help water users file forms).  1170 KPUG
  • Mount Baker Highway east of Glacier will close in both directions starting Monday, Feb. 2 for five full days as crews rebuild a culvert and roadbed damaged by last month’s flooding. Alternating traffic patterns will resume when the road fully reopens.  KISM

  • Whatcom County offers a weekend of events. Today in Blaine, Semiahmoo Resort hosts Andrew Sleighter and Shakedown presents Witch Ripper's heavy metal show.
