- ➤ Bellingham’s weather shelter on N. Forest Street reopened Tuesday night and remains open through Friday with check-in (4–8 p.m.) and checkout at 8 a.m. The shelter at the Lighthouse Mission Drop-In Center is open daily through Saturday, and Ferndale’s United Church shelter opened Tuesday and will run until Friday. - ➤ Overnight shelters in Bellingham on N. Forest Street and at Ferndale's United Church opened Tuesday night and remain available through Friday as temperatures drop below freezing, while a daytime warming center in Bellingham is open until Saturday. KAFE
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Crews rescued two skiers in separate backcountry incidents near Mount Baker over the weekend. BMRC reported one skier was evacuated Saturday from Heather Meadows after an avalanche and another was rescued Sunday from the Hemispheres area (which is not monitored for avalanches) and urged travelers to use safe techniques. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Bellingham City Council on Monday, Feb. 23 will consider extending the landmark tree protection ordinance for six months; the measure, first approved in May 2024 and extended three times, bars removal or damage to trees with trunks 36 inches or more — a step many say will protect local biodiversity. - ➤ Three Whatcom County high school teams ended their seasons last night in the district tournament. Two district championship games are set for tonight at Lynden High School (starting at 5:40 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.) with the Storm boys advancing to a third-place game against Anacortes tomorrow. - ➤ Three high school basketball teams from Whatcom County ended their seasons last night in the district tournament; Lynden High School will host two championship games tonight (girls at 5:40 and boys at 7:15) that could send winners to the state tournament. KISM
