  • Whatcom County shelters opened to keep residents safe from dangerously cold temperatures that risk frostbite and hypothermia, with Lighthouse Mission hosting around 250 people and the United Church of Ferndale shelter filling within minutes. Bellingham’s daytime severe weather shelter stays open through Saturday for extra support.  FOX13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington State Ferries will add a 3% surcharge to credit + debit card purchases starting March 1 due to new state law driving up transaction fees. Riders can pay in cash or use prepaid ORCA cards to avoid the extra cost.  KAFE

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA has expanded a nationwide Class 2 peanut butter recall into Washington, warning that brands including Flavor Fresh, Katy’s Kitchen and House Recipe may cause adverse health effects if eaten.  KAFE
  • Whatcom County updated its reporting process yesterday to let residents report illnesses from water recreation at beaches, lakes, pools and hot tubs — a move to quickly flag emerging health concerns as Little Squalicum Park remains under a swimming advisory due to bacteria.  KAFE

SPORTS NEWS

  • Four Whatcom County high school teams clinched state tournament spots after winning district and tri-district games; Lynden Christian and Lummi teams advanced following wins last night, while Squalicum girls (4:45 p.m. at Mount Vernon High) and Ferndale girls (7:00 p.m. at Shorecrest) will play tonight to secure a state berth.  KISM
