CRIME NEWS

  • A Bellingham man, 33-year-old Brian Drake, pled guilty to charges of child rape, molestation and incest after his victims reported abuse and was sentenced by Whatcom County to five years in prison followed by three years in community custody with a five-year no-contact order—state lawmakers are now moving forward with a bill that would require church leaders to report child abuse.  KISM
  • A 30-year-old Zimbabwean man who illegally crossed the border after stealing a canoe was caught by Border Patrol with nearly 1.5 pounds of MDMA and has pleaded guilty to gun and drug charges, with sentencing set for June 12.  KAFE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Whatcom County's population grew by just over 2,200 residents & now stands at 234,954 based on new Census data showing nearly a 1% increase from July 1, 2023 to July 1, 2024.  KAFE

  • Bellingham hosts a busy St. Patrick’s Day weekend with a parade on March 16 starting on W. Laurel Ave—where local first responders are honored—and events at Boundary Bay Brewery offering live music, Irish food, and afterparties on March 15 and 17. Other activities include a wedding showcase at the Ferndale Events Center on Saturday, a Blue Room live show on Sunday, and the Northwest Birding Festival in Blaine running Friday to Sunday with family-friendly outdoor fun.  KISM
