COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Skagit Valley's two largest tulip farms, RoozenGaarde and Tulip Valley Farms, are opening for the Tulip Festival Saturday, Mar. 21 due to early blooms from a mild winter and warmer weather. Tulip Town and Garden Rosalyn will open on Mar. 28 and Apr. 1 respectively.  KAFE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Danielle Ingham was unanimously chosen as the newest member of the Lynden School Board on March 12, and she will be sworn in at the meeting on March 26.  Lynden Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bellingham city council unanimously voted to extend the landmark tree ordinance for six months—its fourth interim extension since May 2024. City staff will use the extra time to complete permanent rules to protect large trees vital for climate regulation while developers worry the measure may delay housing projects.  KAFE
  • Bellingham city council extended the landmark tree ordinance for another six months to protect its largest trees while permanent regulations are developed. The rule stops removal of trees with a trunk 36 inches or more (violation fines up to $5,000) and marks the fourth extension since May 2024.  KISM

SPORTS NEWS

  • Whatcom County's annual John Clark Senior Classic begins at 6:00 tonight at Lynden High School's Jake Maberry Gym (proceeds benefit Open Hands) and features contests among top high school hoopers (including a 3-point contest and dunk contest) set to unite the community.  My Bellingham Now
  • On Friday, Mar. 13, the Lummi community celebrated its boys and girls basketball teams with a parade. The boys won the state 1B title with a 61-56 win over Tulalip Heritage while the girls reached their best finish since 2009 with a 54-45 win over Pateros, and coaches were honored.  My Bellingham Now
  • WWU women’s basketball team advanced in the D-II national tournament after beating Point Loma on Friday in Ellensburg, with junior guard Libby Stump scoring 21 points. The Vikings will face Cal Poly Pomona in the second round at 5:00 tomorrow.  KISM
