- ➤ The new art exhibition Not the Whole Picture will open at Whatcom Museum on March 22 as community-donated images join sculptures and paintings to explore themes of immigration and queer identity—while Fairhaven residents now hear fewer train horns since a quiet zone began on March 10. Bellingham also is celebrating AmeriCorps Week and inviting feedback on draft Climate and Environment chapters of its growth plan as crews work on road upgrades, with delays expected on Woburn, Roeder and Meridian streets—details in upcoming public releases. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Western Washington University alerted its students and faculty after antisemitic graffiti featuring swastikas and hateful messages was reported and promptly removed—officials said there is no evidence of student involvement and police are following up on leads. KAFE
- ➤ Ferndale Police are investigating racist and antisemitic graffiti at Metal Works Skate Park tagged early March 6 and suspect several individuals using an early to mid-2000s Ford Superduty with an extended cab—community members with information should call Officer Foeung or the dispatch center. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The county Auditor announced a special election on Tuesday, April 22 for Meridian School District voters — ballots will be mailed on April 2 to over 8,200 residents for a nearly $71 million bond measure to fund a new middle school after a previous attempt did not hit the 60% mark. KAFE
- ➤ The Mount Baker School District announced on Friday, March 14th that Jessica Schenck will be its new superintendent after Nick Perigo served as interim since July 2024. Schenck worked as an assistant superintendent in Othello and must now help fix a budget deficit that caused 23 teacher layoffs last year & face many challenges ahead. KISM
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A group of orcas was spotted in Bellingham Bay this week, with the sighting posted on March 14, 2025 — details remain limited as local watchers monitor the marine activity. FOX13
- ➤ The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife reported that over 1 million invasive European green crabs were removed from Puget Sound waters in 2024, mostly from Willapa Bay and Grays Harbor. State agencies, tribes, and shellfish growers now work together to reduce crab numbers in the North Puget Sound region+ efforts are ongoing. FOX13
