ECONOMY NEWS

  • Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed that average weekly wages in Whatcom County increased nearly 6% last year to $1,233 in the third quarter of 2024 – this rise ranked as the second-highest in Washington and placed the county among the top 1/3 of large counties nationally.  KISM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two women filed a lawsuit against the Bellingham Police Department claiming it failed to protect them from abuse by an officer—Amanda DeBruin began her trial in Whatcom County Superior Court and seeks $5 million while Kyla Laughlin asks for $1 million.  KISM
  • Supporters of the shield law say Washington should expand protections for patients and healthcare workers as women from Idaho, Florida, Texas, and Ohio traveled here after Roe v. Wade was overturned—raising worries that out-of-state officials may try to stop treatments.  Lynden Tribune
  • The City of Bellingham will upgrade the sewage sludge incinerators at the Post Point Wastewater Treatment Plant in Fairhaven with new emission control equipment to meet federal air quality standards. The $40 million project (funded by sewer fees and municipal bonds) is set to finish in 2028 after cost and contamination concerns led the city to scrap its plan for an anaerobic digestion system.  KISM
  • Two women filed a lawsuit against the Bellingham Police Department for not protecting them from domestic abuse by a former officer—Amanda DeBruin seeks $5 million and Kyla Laughlin asks for $1 million. The trial began earlier this week in Whatcom County Superior Court—proceedings continue as the case moves forward.  KAFE
  • City of Bellingham Public Works crews will start around-the-clock roadwork on the James Street roundabout (at the intersection of James Street and Bakerview Road) on March 31 and drivers should expect construction delays through the spring. The north section of James Street will close for about 15 days in mid-April while the south section will close for about 10 days, and the project is expected to take about two months to complete.  KISM

  • Family-friendly events will take place across Whatcom County this weekend as the Bellingham Children's Film Festival will begin at Pickford Film Center with Little Kid Flicks at 10 a.m. Saturday, Bookworm at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, and Wallace and Gromit at 11:45 a.m. Sunday—offering varied film screenings for all ages. Other events will include a free veterans gathering at Lynden Heritage Museum on Saturday at 2 p.m. and a Cornhole Tournament hosted by Unity Way Whatcom County at the Bellingham Sportsplex at 5:30 p.m.—and The Wood Brothers will perform rootsy Americana live Saturday night at Mount Baker Theatre.  KISM
