COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bellingham debuts the longest public pier as Little Squalicum Pier opens for public use after being repurposed from a railcar facility. The city will host a ribbon cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 26—an event held in the Marine Drive parking lot to mark this new community space.  KAFE
  • A refugee couple in Lynden had their baby daughter Liya granted a U.S. visa but she and her aunt must still obtain travel documents from the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad — Pakistani deportations of Afghan people add risk to their planned reunion.  Lynden Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • Mount Vernon Police arrested 21-year-old Jose Lozano from Everett and a 17-year-old boy in Oak Harbor on April 2 in connection with the March 17 murder of 18-year-old Alan Mora-Gomez near Skagit Valley College, and authorities said the adult suspect is held on suspicion of second-degree murder while urging anyone with information to call (360) 428-3211.  KAFE
  • Families of 37 men detained by ICE at Mount Baker Roofing in Bellingham on Wednesday morning are urging the company owner to take responsibility for employing the workers over many years. They will rally in Bellingham on Saturday at noon (to protest the raid and demand answers) as uncertainty spreads among loved ones.  FOX13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state’s high school sports authority said it will not enforce two proposed rule changes after state agencies found the amendments violate state law. Several Whatcom County school districts support the changes and an advisory-only vote is scheduled for April 9 (the vote will not implement any changes).  KAFE
  • Bellingham now has the state's longest public pier—Little Squalicum Pier, built in 1912 and donated in 2021—that stretches over 1,200 feet across Bellingham Bay and is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The city will host a public ribbon cutting ceremony on April 26 at 3 p.m. in the Marine Drive parking lot.  KISM

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Today, the Sunnyland Garden Party runs from noon until 9 p.m. Sunday in one of Bellingham's quirkiest neighborhoods — featuring new beers, fun food specials and live music. Other weekend events include free swing dancing in Ferndale from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, the Rainy Days Book Sale at Everson Library from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the $10 Skagit Wood Expo with woodworking demos and family fun on Saturday and Sunday, and a heavy metal show at Shakedown at 9 p.m.—with Bog Ore and Witch Agony opening for Melancholia.  KAFE

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • During the first quarter of 2025, Whatcom County home prices stabilized with a median of $625,000 while Bellingham prices dropped over 6% to $770,000. Home sales increased slightly county-wide, with only Lynden and Birch Bay/Blaine showing a drop—stable mortgage rates are expected to keep prices steady through the year.  KAFE
