COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Whatcom County reported that the state’s final budget left Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library without funding—forcing the nonprofit to seek donations, grants and corporate sponsorships to provide free monthly books for over 4,500 local kids. It aims to build a sustainable funding stream to keep the program running.  KAFE

ECONOMY NEWS

  • In Whatcom County, gas prices have climbed to $5.34 per gallon and diesel hit $6.59 as global oil supply concerns rise (analysts cite the Strait of Hormuz reopening as a key factor).  KAFE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city will close SR 544 from Everson Road to Robinson Street starting Wednesday, Apr. 15 as crews begin installing new sidewalks along the route. Drivers must use Robinson Road as a detour until the project wraps up mid-July.  KISM
  • The northbound I-5 right lane will close overnight on April 7-8 for maintenance between Lakeway Drive and the Guide Meridian; Tuesday closures run from north of Iowa Street to the Guide Meridian and Wednesday's closure at Lakeway Drive and the on-ramp lasts until 6 a.m. Thursday. Drivers plan alternate routes.  KAFE
  • Starting Wednesday, April 15, crews in Everson will close SR 544 between Everson Road and Robinson Street to install new sidewalks, causing detours via Robinson Street into downtown. The project is expected to finish by mid-July (plan alternate routes).  My Bellingham Now
