EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A foundation has launched its Family Support Fund and is raising money to help local students affected by recent ICE raids by providing essentials like food and clothing + the fund will also aid other students facing similar challenges. KISM
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Researchers with the Center for Whale Research said they saw calf J63 swimming with its presumed mother J40 near Victoria, B.C. on April 6th, marking J40’s first birth and the fourth Southern Resident Orca calf born in the past year as they plan to closely monitor the calf because of high early mortality rates. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Public Works crews from the City of Bellingham are hanging nearly 300 new light-pole banners in downtown, Fairhaven, the waterfront, the Arts District and Old Town + each banner shows local activities like bike tracks and digester tanks. City officials said the project is funded by the city's overnight lodging tax + the banners will add color and guide residents and visitors. KAFE
- ➤ The Whatcom County Library System Board of Trustees approved a ballot measure to raise the library levy from 26 cents to 42 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value for the August election. Officials said if the measure fails, the library will cut staff and reduce open hours (only Whatcom County residents outside Bellingham will vote). KISM
- ➤ Bellingham officials were ordered to pay $2.25 million after a jury ruled the city failed to act on domestic abuse by former officer Brooks Laughlin, who was found guilty in December 2018—mistakes that affected his ex-wife Amanda DeBruin and the three children of ex-wife Kyla Lanham. The payout allocates $1.5 million to DeBruin and $250,000 to each child. KISM
