- ➤ A section of South Bay Trail by Fairhaven Center will close for up to two years due to construction + users should take an alternate route along 11th Street while separate work on 10th Street near Taylor Dock may affect travel. KISM
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Janicki Industries is expanding its Bellingham operations at its Woburn Street facility, with construction set to be complete by mid-summer and 125 engineering and manufacturing jobs expected by year's end. The company's multi-state growth plan also includes a new Mount Vernon site to meet future staffing needs. KISM
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The FutureReady task force found gaps in student readiness and is working with education institutions and tribal leaders to propose changes to Washington’s high school graduation requirements, with new legislation expected in 2027. KISM
- ➤ A Blaine childcare center will be built at the Peace Arch Montessori site on Cherry Street after receiving $850,000 in state funds, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County secured $3 million to add 91 spaces. The grants are part of a $56 million investment in early learning. KAFE

- ➤ Sumas Library and Community Center is undergoing added restoration after the December 2025 flood event when repairs uncovered extra work on its south wall, and the City Council approved an extra $45,018.34 recommended by the construction consultant and Public Works Director (Sunny Aulakh). HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Whatcom County Health and Community Services warned residents that a new veterinary sedative found in some fentanyl samples does not work with Narcan, raising concerns for opioid users. Researchers found the chemical in increased amounts last year, so officials urge caution with Narcan use when opioids are involved. KISM
- ➤ Whatcom County Health and Community Services warn that medetomidine (a veterinary sedative 200 to 300 times stronger than xylazine) has been detected with fentanyl since 2025 and Narcan does not reverse its effects, even though it continues to counteract opioids. KAFE
- ➤ Residents can safely dispose of expired medications this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at North Fork and Birch Bay Libraries, as the Sheriff's Office accepts them, with additional drop-off boxes available at Swinomish + Burlington police stations. KISM
