- ➤ A residential fire at 22 North on N State St in Bellingham on Tuesday, April 22 hurt no one as firefighters evacuated the residents — the Opportunity Council is finding new homes for those displaced while investigators review the cause. KAFE

- ➤ Bellingham Parks and Recreation announced that an overnight burglary shut down the Arne Hanna Aquatic Center when unknown suspects broke in and damaged office spaces + windows, and it is unclear when operations will resume. KAFE

- ➤ Bellingham is hosting the CASCADIA International Women's Film Festival from today through Sunday with 29 films shown at local venues including the Pickford Film Center and Mount Baker Theatre where the feature film 'Magic Hour' opens the event. Executive Director Cheryl Crooks said the festival—designed to spotlight films made by women and to boost the local arts scene—offers red carpet events, director interviews, panel discussions, and a script workshop on Sunday morning, with virtual screenings available through early May. - ➤ Preliminary results from Tuesday’s special election showed that only about 48.7% of counted ballots supported the $70.9 million bond proposal to replace Meridian Middle School, with roughly 2,700 of 8,200 registered voters returning ballots—this is below the 60% threshold needed to pass. Last November, a more expensive proposal also fell short of the required percentage. KISM

- ➤ Today, the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife opened spring Chinook fishing on the Skagit River between the Memorial Highway Bridge in Mount Vernon and Gilligan Creek through May 14. Anglers may keep up to two hatchery Chinook per day if they are 12 inches or longer (all other species must be released) and lowland lake fishing opens Saturday, April 26. KISM

- ➤ Gov. Ferguson signed HB 1261 into law on April 22 to ease the tax burden on farms where agritourism is a secondary activity — using less than 20% of their land — allowing these farms to keep their open space designation and pay lower property taxes. The law will take effect in late July and comes as State Sen. Sam Low said it helps farmers earn extra income without facing crippling taxes. My Bellingham Now
- ➤ Today, the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife opened a section of the Skagit River — from the Memorial Highway Bridge in Mount Vernon to Gilligan Creek — for hatchery Chinook salmon fishing, and anglers may keep up to two fish a day if they are at least 12 inches long; the season lasts through May 14.
