COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Greg Winter, executive director of Opportunity Council, will retire in August after 18 years of leading the nonprofit that built over 300 affordable homes + developed crucial downtown services; its board has begun a national search for his successor.  KISM
  • Bellingham will hold Procession of the Species on May 2, 2-5 p.m. with a family craft day on April 26. The county invites hazard plan input until May 30 and an open house on June 2 while a South Bay Trail segment is closed with a detour on 11th Street.  City of Bellingham

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • PAWS transferred a bald eagle to its Lynwood facility at the end of March after an investigation found metal fragments lodged in its jaw from a gunshot. The wildlife team is optimistic the injured bird will recover and eventually return to the wild.  KISM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new Canadian citizenship law now lets Americans with direct ancestry apply for dual citizenship with a $55 fee if they have their documents ready. In Bellingham, immigration attorney Nicholas Berning said his practice now focuses on these cases.  KISM
  • FEMA approved nearly $21 million for flood protection in Oregon and Washington yesterday as part of a $250 million nationwide effort, and the Department of Ecology received a $180,000 grant to develop a flood risk reduction strategy. Local flood managers estimate fixes for the Nooksack River will cost $182 million.  KAFE
  • Nearly $21 million in FEMA funding was approved yesterday to boost flood resilience in Oregon and Washington while Whatcom County flood managers estimated $182 million is needed to fix the Nooksack River + $180,000 is set aside for a flood risk reduction plan.  KISM

  • The Seahawks will make their NFL draft pick tonight at 5:00 on KPUG while Mariners enjoy a day off before a six-game road trip starting tomorrow at 5:15, and local sports media icon Tyler Anderson of Whatcom Preps will receive the Silver Helmet award on May 17.  My Bellingham Now
  • Washington State Fish and Wildlife announced that fishing will open tomorrow at lowland lakes stocked with nearly 15.5 million trout and kokanee. The 11th annual Trout Derby at Lake Padden in Whatcom County offers local prizes for anglers who catch a green-tag trout.  1170 KPUG
