ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Washington’s Recreation and Conservation Office awarded over $3 million to the Northwest Straits Foundation to replace seawalls and boulders along Whatcom County coastlines—work that will give nearly 6.5 miles of shoreline and streams better access for salmon later this summer—using funds from the Climate Commitment Act. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ WSDOT will begin a three-year project to remove 17 fish barriers from I-5 south of Bellingham on Wednesday, April 30 at 8 p.m., replacing them with 10 new structures to help salmon, bull trout and steelhead. Drivers will face overnight single-lane closures until early June and then detours on temporary two-lane bypass roads while work continues until 2027—this project stems from a 2013 federal court injunction. - ➤ A new state law increases fines for employers who break minor labor laws by raising penalties to up to $1,000 per infraction, including not securing required work permits. Gov.
