COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bellingham will host several community events this week including May Mondays in Maritime at Maritime Heritage Park from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on May 5, a downtown meeting at Boundary Bay Brewery from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on May 7, and a Lake Whatcom Forest Management Plan meeting at Silver Beach Elementary from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on May 8. Residents can report traffic safety concerns in select neighborhoods through the new Community Streets Program by May 31 — they can also apply for two openings on the Transportation Commission and get updates on the Downtown Forward plan from Mayor Lund.  City of Bellingham

CRIME NEWS

  • A Whatcom County Jail employee was arrested after contraband including methamphetamine, vapes and nicotine patches was smuggled into inmates' rooms—an investigation revealed that an inmate’s fiancé supplied the items while the inmate admitted to organizing the scheme and both were arrested and released on bail.  KAFE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bellingham International Airport appointed Matthew Rodriguez as its new Director of Aviation on May 2 after he spent five years as Airport Operations Manager, and he will lead a multimillion-dollar runway project and air traffic control tower upgrades—steps that will help improve air travel in the region.  KAFE
  • Governor Bob Ferguson ordered all Washington and U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff from today until sunset on Sunday in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service (a tribute to firefighters who died last year). State agencies may lower the flags at the close of business Friday and raise them first thing Monday morning.  FOX13
  • Candidates for local office will file their declarations online or in person from May 5 through May 9, with four county council and four Bellingham City Council seats up for reelection. County auditor Stacy Henthorn advises candidates to review the filing guide as requirements may change.  KISM
  • The Whatcom County Auditor’s Office announced that candidate filing week will run from May 5 through May 9 for elections to four county council seats and four Bellingham City Council seats—candidates can file online or in person and should review the filing guide for any changes. HEALTH NEWS

  • Over 1,000 unionized workers at PeaceHealth in Bellingham will strike for five days starting Monday, May 12—union representatives cited low wages, understaffing, and limited time with patients as their main concerns—while the hospital has arranged temporary staff to ensure uninterrupted patient care.  KISM

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • This weekend, good spring weather invites Bellingham residents to explore local trails like Sumas Mountain and Lake Whatcom Park and take part in on-going art walks including an immersive project in vacant downtown storefronts. Kulshan Brewing Company opened its summer beer garden on the Waterfront with live music today — while El Sueñito Brewing Company will host Cinco de Mayo events on Monday with food, painting and dance.  KISM
