BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bellingham’s 400-foot fishing vessel The Hannah was placed under arrest when a judge approved a claim that Northline Seafood owes nearly $1.3 million to Seattle-based Leo’s Welding + U.S. Marshals may hold the barge until they secure the claim. The company said the vessel will leave Bellingham waters later this month to resume work in Bristol Bay.  KAFE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Lynden School District sent two letters asking for an investigation into the state’s noncompliance with Title IX — the school board voted 5-to-0 on May 1 to forward the request.  Lynden Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Port of Bellingham ended its contract with Ireland-based Harcourt Developments after commissioners voted unanimously on Tuesday, May 6 in response to repeated project delays. The termination agreement removes Harcourt’s exclusive waterfront rights and orders removal of their materials from Port property within the next year — while allowing the company to keep a few restored buildings.  KISM
  • Gov. Bob Ferguson signed a rent stabilization law that limits annual rent increases to 7% plus inflation or 10%—and it caps rent on mobile homes at 5% while banning increases during the first year with landlords required to give 90 days’ notice. The Department of Commerce will determine the allowable rate annually beginning June 1.  KISM

  • Developers said on May 5 that the North Haven tiny home village near the former North Coast Credit Union property is nearing completion and residents should move in by the end of the month—HomesNOW! will donate 25 of the smaller units to United Way of Skagit County.  KAFE
