COMMUNITY NEWS

  • WSDOT said it broke apart the famed I-5 graffiti rock on May 6 for removal – a change made to clear a temporary bypass road for construction on Chuckanut Creek. The agency will share a limited number of the pieces with interested residents once its plan is finalized.  KISM
  • Bellingham celebrates APIDA Heritage Month with a festival Tuesday, May 12 at Whatcom Community College featuring free meals, performances and vendors while residents submit new park name ideas until May 28. Preschool storytime is on May 13, Bike to Work Day on May 15 and water quality remains excellent.  City of Bellingham

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eligible workers in Whatcom-Skagit counties affected by December flooding may apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance until June 10 if they lost jobs or had reduced hours. The federal program also qualifies members of the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Indian Tribe along with eight other counties.  My Bellingham Now
  • Thirteen counties and one tribe are promoting the Ready, Set, Go! evacuation campaign to help residents prepare for an early wildfire season in our region. The initiative clarifies alert levels for all hazards amid an ongoing drought in western Washington.  KISM

HEALTH NEWS

  • PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center said parking near the ER will be limited from Monday, May 11 for about two years as crews build the Peter Paulsen Pavilion to expand women's and children's care, and visitors may use the east central garage and north visitor parking.  KISM

  • Western's softball team won 11-2 this afternoon to advance to the GNAC Championships semifinals; the 2nd-seeded Viks will face the winner of Saint Martin's and Simon Frasier in Ellensburg tomorrow.  KISM
