COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Whatcom Transportation Authority is increasing bus service for Ski to Sea on May 24 by running buses every 10 minutes from downtown to Fairhaven from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and every 15 minutes afterward; fares are $1 with free rides for under-18 passengers.  KAFE

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A traffic incident on I-5 near Sunset Dr has blocked all lanes and caused backups north to Samish Way while officials, including fire assistance + WSP and medical aid, work to clear the scene.  KISM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A cyberattack on Canvas shut down access at WWU, Whatcom Community College and Bellingham Technical College on May 7 — a breach that may have exposed student names, emails and IDs. Schools have since restored access and warned students to avoid suspicious emails.  My Bellingham Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • WSDOT will reduce I-5 near Alger to one lane at 8 p.m. Sunday, May 10, for a fish passage project that closes northbound on-ramp from Lake Samish for a month; work pauses for the World Cup between June 12 and July 8 so drivers use Hwy 9 or Chuckanut Drive.  KISM
  • The Lummi Nation filed an emergency injunction on Thursday, May 7 to stop Whidbey Telecom from proceeding with construction on ancient burial grounds in Point Roberts after documents showed inadequate damage assessments and damage to human remains — county records acknowledged improper permit issuance. Whidbey Telecom has not yet responded.  KAFE

  • WWU's softball team lost 9-5 to Simon Frasier on Friday, May 8, in the GNAC Championships in Ellensburg and will play Saint Martin's at 3 p.m. today for a spot in tomorrow's championship game.  KISM
