- ➤ Birch Bay Waterslides will reopen on June 14 — the park has been closed since 2023 after an incident that led to an ongoing lawsuit. It has sold day tickets and season passes online since early May — a sign that local guests are preparing for its return. KISM

- ➤ Leslie Lekos, founder of Wildroot Botanicals, led a seaweed harvesting workshop at Fort Ebey State Park’s beach on Whidbey Island on May 3 where students learned to forage safely after obtaining a Washington state fishing license and bringing their own tools. She has taught herbalism and foraging classes in Whatcom and Skagit Counties for over a decade—she now offers additional workshops during the summer and fall. My Bellingham Now

- ➤ Last winter, Whatcom County Health and Community Services found that staffing shortages and guest safety concerns, along with reliance on daily weather forecasts, challenged operation at the severe weather shelter—located at the former Central Lutheran Church, where capacity nearly doubled. - ➤ The Whatcom County Auditor’s Office announced a three-day filing period for local candidates that ends at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 16, for 13 open seats which will be on the November ballot—these include commissioner roles on local fire districts, cemetery districts, a water district and Lynden Regional Park and Recreation. - ➤ The Whatcom County Charter Review Commission nears its deadline to propose amendments that will update the county charter — the document that governs Whatcom County operations — as part of its 10-year review. Lynden Tribune
