- ➤ Whatcom County Dairy Women received a ($2,000) grant from Dairy Farmers of Washington this spring to support their work promoting dairy products and teaching about dairy farming (the nonprofit is focused on local dairy education). Lynden Tribune
- ➤ The Friends of the Bellingham Public Library will host a Spring Book Sale from May 21 to 24 in the Central Library Lecture Room with most books priced at $2 or less, and the city will hold its annual Meet-a-Truck event on May 22—featuring a scavenger hunt, crafts and a close look at public works equipment. City staff will address utility investments and proposed changes to the Multi-Family Tax Exemption program in a public hearing on May 19—while National Police Week and next weekend events including the Gathering of the Eagles, Memorial Day Parade and Ski to Sea race bring the community together. - ➤ CVS Pharmacy announced plans on May 16th to acquire dozens of Rite Aid stores, including 64 locations in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho that are pending approval in a New Jersey court hearing. The company said it will work with Rite Aid to ensure a seamless transition for customers and employees once the sale is finalized. FOX13

- ➤ Boxx Berry Farm in Ferndale will be sold to the Port of Bellingham after nearly 65 years in operation — the county approved a preliminary $3 million investment to convert the 60-acre property into an agricultural research station run by Washington State University. The farm will offer its final U-pick season before closing on October 1. KISM

- ➤ Blaine schools announced yesterday that Dan Chaplik, who led Sultan schools since 2007 and began his career in Blaine, will serve as interim superintendent for the upcoming school year—he replaces Christopher Granger, who starts his new role in Sultan on July 1. KISM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Whatcom County Council (which met earlier this week) voted to ask the county executive to raise Lummi Island ferry fares this summer because rates have not increased since 2012 and the system is in crisis. Council member Ben Elenbaas warned that delaying the increase may force even steeper hikes later. KISM
- ➤ Today, WSDOT said that Bellingham’s graffiti rock—a cherished landmark since 1969—must have a new public site by June 1 to allow for fish passage construction on Chuckanut Creek. The agency will work with partners to find a location and may extend the deadline if progress is made, or else it will preserve parts of the rock for display. KAFE
- ➤ Boxx Berry Farm in Ferndale, which operated for nearly 65 years on about 60 acres, is being sold to the Port of Bellingham as approved by the Whatcom County Council.
