- ➤ Trader Joe's will open its second Bellingham store at 4255 Meridian Street in the Cordata Center on Thursday, May 29 at 8 a.m. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 7:55 a.m.—with music and giveaways to welcome customers. KAFE
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 34-year-old man was shot and killed during a police pursuit that began on Saturday, May 17 in south Whatcom County when he refused to stop for a stolen motorcycle, led police onto NB I-5 near Lake Samish, abandoned his bike for a small boat in the Cain Lake neighborhood, and fired in several directions before being struck by a bullet—no officers or nearby residences were hurt. - ➤ The Northwest Washington Fair announced it will host Country Shuffle on August 9 at the Bank of the Pacific Grandstand with performances by Colt Ford, David Lee Murphy and Connor Smith. Tickets cost $45 for reserved seats and $60 for preferred seating + general sales begin Friday, May 23 at 9 a.m. with a pre-sale for Friends of the Fair subscribers starting Wednesday. KAFE
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Bob Ferguson signed HB 5390 on May 17 so that starting Oct 1 the Discover Pass fee will rise from $30 to $45 for state parks in Whatcom County—this marks the first increase since 2011 and removes the reservation fee waiver for veterans using the Lifetime Veterans’ Disability Pass. KAFE

- ➤ Nurses at PeaceHealth in Bellingham reached a tentative agreement for a new contract through 2028 that gives an instant $4.25 hourly raise and roughly 3% wage increases for the next two years—union members will vote on the deal starting May22 through Friday night. KISM

- ➤ The Ski to Sea relay race will take place this Sunday from Mt. Baker to Fairhaven with thousands expected and racers must reach Mount Baker Lodge by 7:15 a.m. before it closes. Birch Equipment aims to extend its winning streak while WTA will offer extra bus trips every 15 minutes between Western Washington University and Fairhaven Festival—the final leg ends at Marine Park in the early afternoon.
