CRIME NEWS

  • A Marysville man, 23-year-old Elijah Belmont, pleaded guilty to the 2023 murder of Henry King at Boulevard Park in Bellingham and his sentencing is set for 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 22 in Whatcom County Superior Court—he could face a life sentence and a $50,000 fine.  KISM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bellingham Mayor Kim Lund and Whatcom County Executive Satpal Sidhu held presentations on Tuesday at Hotel Bellwether and answered questions about plans for a new county jail opening on July 4, 2028, cost cuts in city services outside police and fire, and downtown revitalization with new housing, bike patrols and a state of the art skatepark—both leaders noted that a report on reduced Canadian travel is expected next month.  KAFE
  • Local father and longtime legal immigrant Maximo Londonio has been detained at Sea-Tac Airport since May 15 and may soon be moved to an ICE facility—his wife Crystal held a rally demanding his release while saying he was fed only instant noodles during his detention.  FOX13

  • PeaceHealth nurses at St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham will vote on a new tentative agreement on May 22–23 as they seek improvements in their contract terms—recent union pickets underscored their concerns, with pediatric nurse Heather Bryce even donning a T-Rex costume to draw attention to the issues.  Lynden Tribune
