- ➤ Today, Bellingham honors fallen service members with a Memorial Day parade from noon to 2 p.m. starting at Alabama and Cornwall while some public facilities close on May 26 and streets in Fairhaven and Downtown see restrictions for festivities—elected officials will meet on June 4 for Lake Whatcom updates, residents can share Eldridge bike lane pilot feedback until June 8, and comments on the updated Commute Trip Reduction Plan are invited before meetings on June 10 and June 23. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Whatcom County authorities arrested a 55-year-old California man last Tuesday at the county jail for leading a fraud scheme that tricked a local resident into depositing over $100,000 in cash and gold into a fake federal reserve account — police suspect he is part of a national ring targeting seniors and remind the public that law enforcement never calls to ask for funds or valuables. - ➤ The Sumas Historical Society is launching a self-guided walking tour using a $7,850 tourism promotion grant to install new signage and advertise the tour—residents can explore town history while the museum remains open one day a week. Lynden Tribune

- ➤ Samara Pike, a third grader at Sumas Elementary School in Nooksack Valley, became a published artist when her illustration of her favorite word was featured in SPIDER magazine—she loves drawing chickens and cats and finds inspiration in books and her creative ideas with stuffed animals. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The first humpback whale calf of the 2025 season was spotted on Wednesday in the Salish Sea near San Juan Island by the Pacific Whale Watch Association. The calf is believed to be four to five months old and was seen with its mother—Big Mama—who has given birth to eight calves over three decades. KAFE

- ➤ The Mariners will start tonight at 5:10 p.m. with Emerson Hancock on the mound as they try to rebound after a 9+2 loss to Houston and star Julio Rodriguez returns to the lineup.
