ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Washington State Department of Natural Resources will host a free vessel turn-in event in Whatcom County this summer to stop abandoned boats from polluting local waters. Residents must pre-apply by July 1 with proof of ownership while boats over 34 feet will not be accepted.  KAFE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bellingham Mayor Kim Lund said on May 27 that she named Joel Pfundt as Director of Public Works and Mike Olinger as Deputy Director, effective immediately—both served as interim co-directors since July 2024. They bring many years of work in roads, water, and city services to help run the department well.  City of Bellingham

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Friday, PeaceHealth nurses at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center voted to ratify a new contract through 2028 that gives an instant hourly raise of $4.25 and planned 3% wage hikes over the next two years— the highest three-year increases in union history with added benefits such as guaranteed pharmacy access and stronger hospice nurse protections. The contract will take effect on June 1.  KISM

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Glacier's former Oculis Lodge site will go to auction on June 9 when auction company Crexi accepts bids for the 2-acre mono-dome property off Mt Baker Hwy — originally planned as a glamping project — with a $75,000 starting bid and a mandatory $10,000 deposit. Open houses are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday to let buyers view the property.  KISM
  • On June 9, Crexi will take bids for the former Oculis Lodge site, a 2 acre property off Mt Baker Hwy that was once listed on Redfin for $725,000 but now has a starting bid of $75,000. Interested bidders must pay a $10,000 deposit before submitting offers and open houses will be held Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  KAFE

SPORTS NEWS

  • Northwest sports saw Birch Equipment win the 93-mile Ski to Sea race on Sunday with a time of 5 hours, 44 minutes while WWU softball ended its postseason run with a 2 to 0 loss to UT Tyler in the College World Series semifinals. The Mariners are hosting the Nationals tonight — first pitch at 6:40 after losing three of four games to the Astros, as the Storm beat the Las Vegas Aces 102 to 82 and Sehome boys soccer advanced to the state semifinals while Lynden Christian baseball ended its season in the opening round.  KISM
