COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City advises caution near nesting herons and prepares for multiple community events, including Youth Pride on May 30 at 11 a.m. near City Hall & a summer soccer fan zone starting mid-June, while downtown parking and Rock Hill Park playgrounds get updates.  City of Bellingham

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bellingham-based Cascadia Daily News fired executive editor Ron Judd on May 26 over disagreements about its new quarterly magazine (Cascadia Daily Life). The paper plans to hire a new editor and add a marketing director to guide its future direction.  Whatcom News
  • Woods Coffee will close its Railroad Avenue shop downtown by the end of May due to falling foot traffic and rising costs (no relocation plans announced). The chain now operates 23 locations as businesses across the region face reduced daytime activity.  My Bellingham Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Sounds, organized by the Downtown Bellingham Partnership, will begin on July 8 and run for five weeks with Wednesday concert nights blocking off Bay, Holly and Prospect streets. The series will feature local acts including the debut of the Bellingham-based Stapletones, a multi-act All-Star Super Jam & added services like Parents Night Out childcare and a free bike valet.  KAFE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bellingham Public Schools’ Facilities Planning Task Force recommended that Carl Cozier and Columbia elementary schools close in fall 2027 due to declining enrollment and will form a new work group to reassign students — while Roosevelt Elementary is planned for a rebuild.  My Bellingham Now
  • The Meridian School District stated that no significant staff cuts were planned as it prepares for a change, with Dr. Kurt Harvill set to become interim superintendent on July 1 following Dr. James Everett’s move to Anacortes + its finalized budget released May 27 confirms the plans.  My Bellingham Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Puget Sound Energy has partnered with the Port of Bellingham to launch a new community solar project at Zuanich Point Park. A system installed on the Fisherman's Pavilion roof will generate about 100 kilowatts—part of efforts to expand access for income-qualified households.  KISM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State crews began clearing the final miles on Mount Baker Highway to Artist Point nearly a week earlier than last spring - removing up to 20-foot snow from the road and parking lot. No reopening date is set yet for this popular outdoor destination.  KAFE

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Locals have a fun-filled weekend starting today with the Shoestring Circus on the waterfront until June 14, Saturday’s Roller Derby at Lynden Skateway, Sunday’s downtown food tour with a Bells fundraiser, and a live all-ages show at Aim & Game in Ferndale at 7 p.m.  KAFE

  • Former Vikings football coach Terry Todd died Tuesday at age 90. He coached Western from 1987 to 2005 & served at local schools including Bellingham High before his family announced a memorial service planned for July.  KISM
