CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police arrested a 61-year-old man at an encampment near E. Kellogg Road after he stabbed another person in the back on Saturday morning, leaving the victim with a non-life-threatening lower back injury — the suspect, who did not require hospitalization for his medical issue, was booked into Whatcom County Jail — following a 911 call. - ➤ Bellingham police arrested an 18-year-old man early Saturday morning after he was accused of assaulting two transient people on Railroad Avenue—he was later released on bail on charges of robbery, assault and malicious mischief. KISM
- ➤ A Sedro-Woolley woman pleaded guilty to stealing over $1.4 million from Hardware Sales in Bellingham by forging checks and misusing funds, and her sentencing is set for June 26 when prosecutors recommend up to 33 months in prison—she must also repay over $226,000 in unpaid taxes. KAFE
- ➤ Bellingham police arrested a 61-year-old man after he stabbed a person at a homeless encampment near the Meridian Guide on Saturday morning; the victim suffered a non-life-threatening lower back injury and the suspect did not need hospital care for his medical issue before being booked into jail. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ WSDOT crews began clearing the 2.7 mile stretch of the highway to Artist Point on June 2, but there is no set reopening date this season — drivers are advised to exercise caution in the active work zone. KISM
- ➤ Whatcom County’s Economic Development Investment program is offering up to $10 million in grants and low-interest loans to support projects such as affordable housing — including efforts by non-profit housing organizations — and utility expansion. Applications are open now and must be submitted by June 30 on the county website. KISM
- ➤ On June 3, the Port of Bellingham approved plans to install bike lockers at Bellingham International Airport and Fairhaven Station; pending Executive Director Rob Fix’s signature, the project will use the Transit Access Fund from WTA (covering 90% of costs) while the Port supplies the remaining 10%.
