CRIME NEWS

  • Ferndale Police are searching for 18-year-old Ezra Smith who went missing on May 24 in downtown Bellingham while wearing a black short-sleeve button-up shirt, blue sweatshirt, jeans and black shoes; he is 6 feet 5 inches tall, weighs about 170 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes, and anyone with information is asked to call 9-1-1.  My Bellingham Now
  • A 28-year-old woman pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter in Whatcom County Superior Court for fatally striking a pedestrian on E. Axton Road north of Bellingham when driving under the influence in May 2022—she will serve 20 months in prison followed by a year of community supervision.  KISM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Washington State Department of Ecology declared an emergency drought for Whatcom and Skagit Counties as water supplies fell below 75% of normal—rapid snowmelt and warmer spring temperatures led to the expanded declaration. This action follows earlier measures in parts of Yakima and Kittitas Counties while drought advisories remain for the Seattle, Tacoma and Everett areas.  KISM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Whatcom County Health and Community Services is seeking a provider to manage next winter’s severe weather shelter in Bellingham and will offer up to $550,000 in funding for the operation. Interested parties must submit plans or propose a location by June 24—applicants can choose to operate the shelter on dangerous nights or as a nightly winter service.  KISM
