Good morning, Bellingham. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 17th of July.

CRIME NEWS

  • Xiaobun Zhou’s 30-year-old son was arrested on July 8 for taking $20,000 from his father’s home after his father was charged in May for a fraud that took over $100,000 from a local resident (the recorded conversation helped establish probable cause) and he faces arraignment on July 18.  KISM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ballots for a summer special election in Whatcom County were mailed on July 16 and include two proposed levies for the South Whatcom Fire Authority — for the Whatcom County Rural Library District. The ballot also covers primary races for eight offices, and voters must have their ballots returned by August 5 to be counted.  KISM
  • Washington is joining 19 other states and Pennsylvania’s governor in a lawsuit against FEMA’s decision to end the BRIC program — a plan that funds floodwalls, levees and backup power for hospitals. Attorney General Nick Brown said the cut endangers communities — the lawsuit seeks a court order to restore the program and its billions in funding, plus over $180 million in local projects.  KISM
  • The Port of Bellingham Board of Commissioners voted 2-1 on Tuesday night to propose adding two new commissioners and to place the proposal on the November ballot for voters in western Whatcom County. One commissioner expressed concerns that a longer public comment period was needed before finalizing this change.  KISM
