COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Today, the City of Bellingham is preparing several events for the community, including a Children's Craft Fair on July 25 at Lee Memorial Park, a DIY air cleaner workshop on July 24 at City Hall, and a City Council meeting on July 21 to discuss the Barkley Urban Village plan. Construction projects and road work—including early-morning repairs at the Roeder Lift Station and night repaving on Meridian Street—will affect local travel in the coming weeks, and residents should allow extra time for detours. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Washington joined a multi-state lawsuit with 19 other states (led by Attorney General Nick Brown) to block a new health coverage rule that will take effect on Aug. 25 and could make it harder for residents to enroll in or keep their health insurance. KAFE
- ➤ The Port of Bellingham is inviting Whatcom County residents to submit written For or Against statements on expanding its Board of Commissioners from three to five members, and these responses will appear in the voters’ pamphlet for the November 4 election. Committee applications will be due by 4 p.m. on July 23 and committee members will be chosen the following morning—after commissioners voted 2-1 earlier this week to bring the proposal to the voters. - ➤ Bellingham’s popular South Bay Trail will close later this month and remain closed for about 18 months as the Fairhaven Center is built on private property (the pit). A detour will be in place from Taylor Dock to Fairhaven until the trail is re-established after construction. KAFE
- ➤ The Whatcom County Council will discuss a proposal to lower the speed limit to 20 mph near Alderwood Elementary School at their Tuesday meeting. The change is strongly supported by the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office & Bellingham Public Schools as similar limits already exist on Hollywood and Redwood Avenues. My Bellingham Now
- ➤ Washington joined a lawsuit with 19 other states led by Attorney General Nick Brown to block a health care rule—set to take effect on Aug. 25—that would make it harder for people to keep their insurance. Brown said the rule would lower Health Benefit Exchange use and add extra costs to taxpayers. KISM
- ➤ BWCHA secured funding to rehabilitate and elevate Sumas Square Apartments—a senior housing complex damaged by the November 2021 floods. The project will move forward as a key measure to restore safe housing. Lynden Tribune
