GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Blaine voters will decide this November on a plan to remove about 570 acres of undeveloped land—mostly forests, wetlands and ponds including 470 acres of Grandis Pond—from the city in exchange for urban growth areas near Semiahmoo. The proposal will pass only if 60% of voters approve it.  KAFE
  • Amy Cloud, Public Information Officer for the Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management, said residents can build a two-weeks-ready kit with food, water, shelter, sanitation supplies and important documents to stay secure if a disaster delays responders for up to two weeks. The preparation steps—similar to vacation planning—offer a practical way for locals to be ready for emergencies.  KISM
  • Voters in Blaine will decide this fall whether to de-annex 570 acres of rural land as the city placed the measure on the November ballot. The proposal, which includes 470 acres from the Grandis Pond area, will need a 60% supermajority to pass—enabling the city to swap the land for urban growth areas near Semiahmoo.  KISM
  • Bellingham City Council held four public hearings Monday night on Barkley Village development, with one hearing addressing the area’s adherence to the Environmental Policy Act as the Talbot Group proposed a mixed-use rezone featuring an eight-story central core and conserved open space.
