CRIME NEWS

  • Blaine police arrested a 42 year old man on Sunday after he threatened to kill an officer and residents during a standoff on Peace Portal Drive—he fled into the Bayside Motor Inn and was taken into custody by Bellingham police, and he now faces bail set at $25,000 at Whatcom County Jail.  KISM

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday, dozens of naked people rode in Bellingham’s 17th annual Naked Bike Ride along Hilton Avenue as they headed toward Zuanich at 1 p.m. and then turned downtown to wave at Farmer’s Market visitors—adding a festive political note to the event.  KISM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Data from Washington’s Department of Revenue shows that retail sales in Whatcom County have fluctuated since last year—Bellingham increased by nearly 1.6% while Blaine and Lynden held steady and other areas experienced larger shifts.  KAFE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the City of Bellingham announced several public space and road projects—affecting routes like Roeder Avenue near Squalicum Harbor, downtown Holly Street, the Samish Way overpass and Meridian Street—that will involve work from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m.; temporary street closures near Whatcom Falls Park may occur while WSDOT seeks community input on the sewer project until Aug. 7.  KISM
  • Bellingham voters will decide on Initiative 25-03 this November that stops landlords from forcing tenants to sign nondisclosure agreements and from retaliating against renters taking protected actions (such as organizing, reporting legal issues, or distributing flyers) (the city council voted unanimously to send the measure to the ballot).  My Bellingham Now
  • A new tenant protections initiative will appear on the November ballot in Bellingham that will prevent landlords from retaliating against tenant actions like organizing, reporting violations, and distributing flyers — it also bans lease nondisclosure agreements and was sent to the ballot by a unanimous city council vote.  KISM
