- ➤ Local activist Alfredo 'Lelo' Juarez Zeferino returned to Mexico after months in ICE detention, saying he left because he could not stand the harsh conditions at the NW Detention Center — Community to Community called his removal a tremendous miscarriage of justice. KISM

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Lynden School District voted on July 17 to place a $129M bond measure on the November ballot—if approved by 60 percent of voters it will fund a new high school, performing arts center and gym and athletic complex renovations—and the measure follows two failed proposals in 2024. KISM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Voters in Ferndale will decide on Initiative 25-01, the city’s first initiative on the ballot this fall—if approved, it will eliminate junk fees for renters and cap application fees at $50. The measure was submitted in March to the county auditor’s office and the city is seeking volunteer writers for pro and con statements due by July 27. KAFE
- ➤ Whatcom County's LEAD program received full funding from Washington Healthcare Authority and North Sound Behavioral Health to keep frequent offenders with mental or substance issues out of jail—county officials report the program helped reduce jail bookings by 83% for 78 participants in 2023 and will continue to support community safety.
