CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Lummi Nation officer was shot early Monday when a suspect drove into a ditch and fired multiple times — the injured officer was taken to hospital and underwent surgery — and the 26-year-old suspect Javier Pena Flores, known for prior drug charges, was arrested in Ferndale as investigators continued the probe. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Bellingham opened an online survey to gather residents' feedback on updating the Holly Street bike corridor from Ellis to Broadway—responses on priorities such as parking, public transit, safety, and traffic flow are accepted until September 30 and final construction will finish in summer 2027. - ➤ On Monday, July 28, the City of Bellingham required drivers on a downtown stretch of State Street between Holly Street and the roundabout to back into their angled parking spaces, with repaving work finished by midday. City officials said the change improved visibility and increased safety for cyclists — as drivers no longer back out blindly into moving traffic. KISM
