CRIME NEWS

  • Lester Payton, aged 57, was arrested on Monday and remains at Whatcom County Jail without bail after a fight at the Ferndale Event Center turned deadly when Anthony Sperry, aged 61 and hired to help with event setup, was assaulted and later died from his injuries.  KAFE
  • A state report from the Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs showed that crime in Whatcom County dropped nearly 19% from 2023 to 2024—with reductions in assault, burglary, property damage and motor vehicle theft seen in Bellingham, Ferndale and Lynden while kidnapping and drug violations increased.  KISM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s Far Eastern coast and triggered a tsunami advisory along Washington’s outer coast, including the Juan de Fuca Strait, with first waves forecast to hit Washington at 11:30 p.m. and Bellingham at 1:10 a.m.—local officials advise residents to avoid beaches and waterways.  My Bellingham Now
  • Parts of western Washington are under a tsunami advisory after an 8.7-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Russia on July 29. The advisory warns residents, including those in Bellingham, that dangerous waves may hit as early as today at 1:10 a.m.—officials continue to monitor the situation closely.  FOX13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New state laws went into effect on Sunday that raised marriage license fees by $100 to fund domestic violence response services — liquor license fees, hunting and fishing permits, cigarette taxes, and fines for littering on state highways also increased while new Good Samaritan protections were introduced for vehicle break-ins during emergencies.  My Bellingham Now
