COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Community Boating Center in Bellingham will soon install a wheelchair accessible dock to improve water access for those with mobility challenges—Executive Director Bryan Rust said the center is also working with accessibility expert Daman Wandke to add more accessible sailboats and plan inclusive race events.  KISM
  • The new owners of Nooksack Berries & Blooms are working with local community members to reduce blueberry waste—two local families bought the farm in April, and former owner Jim Stanton started the u-pick farm in 2017.  Lynden Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • A Bellingham man was arrested for allegedly stealing nearly $10,000 in sports cards from his neighbor—some of which included an autographed Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card and were later found at a local shop—and he was released on personal recognizance the next day.  My Bellingham Now
  • Jesus Penualas-Agramon provided false identification during his arrest for the July 28 shooting of a Lummi Nation officer and appeared in Whatcom County Superior Court on July 30—he was held without bail, according to WCSO.  Lynden Tribune
  • A 27-year-old former jail contractor was sentenced to six months in jail after he smuggled contraband into Whatcom County Jail using help from an inmate's wife when drugs were found in the kitchen in April—court documents said.  KISM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A state work zone speed camera program caught nearly 7,600 speeding drivers in its first 90 days with almost 4,000 potential tickets still under review—most issued to first-time violators. The program fined repeat offenders nearly $65,000 and will charge $125 for first-time infractions next year.  My Bellingham Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Whatcom County Health and Community Services will host a free vaccine clinic on Tuesday, August 5 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 800 E. Chestnut St. in Bellingham for uninsured adults to receive Hepatitis A and B shots and for those under 19 to get recommended childhood vaccines. Appointments can be scheduled online or by walking in (walk-ins are not guaranteed a slot).  KAFE
