CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Lynden man was arrested on July 30th after his car went airborne near I-5 when deputies saw him speeding on Slater Rd and he refused a search so a K9 detected suspected cocaine and found brass knuckles and he was later released on personal recognizance on Wednesday. KISM
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Bellingham Planning and Community Development Department approved the MDNS for The Woods at Viewcrest, a project that subdivides 37.7 acres into 38 lots and open spaces, amid local concerns about the great blue heron feeding grounds and landslide risks - public comments are accepted until 5 p.m. today and the Protect Mud Bay Cliffs group plans to file an appeal. - ➤ The EPA terminated the $7 billion Solar for All program—cutting over $150 million slated for Washington—to fund residential solar projects for lower-income households scheduled for early 2026. FOX13
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Washington State Attorney General Nick Brown said Wednesday that eight landlords were fined $2,000 each for raising rent more than allowed under a law that started in May. They took back their rent increase notices and gave back extra rent money to over 250 households — enforcing the new rent stabilization rule. KAFE
- ➤ Whatcom County voters approved a library levy lid lift on Aug 7 as more than 56% supported the library's financial needs — an estimated 33 ballots were still counted. The decision will help fund the county library system’s 10 branches. Lynden Tribune
- ➤ On Aug 6, the Washington State Transportation Commission approved a plan to raise ferry fares to meet revenue targets from the state Transportation Budget passed earlier this year. Vehicle and passenger fares on all routes will jump 3% starting Oct 1+ they will jump another 3% in May 2026 while the summer surcharge rises to 35% and Lummi Island fares increase on Aug 23. KAFE
