CRIME NEWS

  • A Colorado man, 23-year-old Jesus Penuelas-Agramon, pleaded not guilty in Whatcom County Superior Court to charges including attempted murder after a Lummi officer was shot seven times on July 28 while investigating a car in a ditch— the officer is recovering well and making great progress— and his trial is set for Sept. 22 following a status hearing on Aug. 27.  My Bellingham Now
  • Bellingham Police are investigating a potential hate crime after a security guard was assaulted outside an apartment building on Sunday night on N. Samish Way—two suspects have been arrested and are held in jail without bail while detectives review the case.  KISM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A contractor’s generator fuel leak was detected Thursday in Padden Creek during the Fairhaven fish passage project after crews contained a spill on August 3. Contractors replaced the generator+ crews monitored pumps+ and a stop work order was issued after two fish were killed until the spills were fully contained.  My Bellingham Now
  • On August 6, Whatcom County Council narrowly voted to acquire over 1,600 acres on Stewart Mountain—$5.5 million in funding from the Streamflow Restoration Grant program will add the land to the planned Stewart Mountain Community Forest for protection.  KISM
  • The Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife forecasts more than 7,000 hatchery Chinook salmon will return to Whatcom Creek from mid-August into October—fishing is open in lower Whatcom Creek on Saturdays and Sundays through Sept. 14 as part of a 10-year co-managed plan with BTC and local tribes.  My Bellingham Now
  • Wildcat Cove in Larrabee State Park is open for swimming again after tests showed bacteria levels have dropped to safe ranges—officials did not specify when the advisory was lifted.  My Bellingham Now
