ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A helicopter crashed at Skagit Regional Airport in Burlington on Aug. 18 when its tail struck a light pole during takeoff—two persons on board were taken to Skagit Regional Health with minor injuries while officials work with the FAA and NTSB to investigate the cause.  KAFE
  • On Aug. 14 at 2 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard rescued 12 kayakers in distress between Patos Island and Sucia Island—Bellingham teams with RCMP and Washington State Park crew brought them safely to Orcas Island and credited a VHF marine radio for the prompt response.  KAFE

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Whatcom County will receive nearly $370,000 from the state’s Estuary and Salmon Restoration Program to buy over three acres of mudflat wetlands at the meeting of California Creek and Drayton Harbor—another nearly $1.8 million will be divided among seven counties to help landowners reduce shoreline armoring. These funds come from the Climate Commitment Act to support ongoing projects that protect salmon habitat and improve water quality.  KAFE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Birch Bay residents are invited to share their views on a Whatcom County survey that examines the financial feasibility and service impacts of incorporating the area. The public survey closes Sept. 10 and a final report will be released this fall—plus a community barbecue will be held at Birch Bay State Park on Aug. 21 to update residents.  KAFE

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Seahawks ran well in a 33-16 preseason win over the Chiefs while the Mariners will try to bounce back today after a weekend loss to the Mets—Victor Robles now faces a possible suspension for throwing his bat in a Triple-A game. The Sounders’ 10-game unbeaten run ended with a 1-0 loss to Minnesota and the Storm, who just unveiled a Sue Bird statue, will play Chicago tomorrow in a tight match.  My Bellingham Now
