On Aug. 14 at 2 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard rescued 12 kayakers in distress between Patos Island and Sucia Island—Bellingham teams with RCMP and Washington State Park crew brought them safely to Orcas Island and credited a VHF marine radio for the prompt response.

Whatcom County will receive nearly $370,000 from the state’s Estuary and Salmon Restoration Program to buy over three acres of mudflat wetlands at the meeting of California Creek and Drayton Harbor—another nearly $1.8 million will be divided among seven counties to help landowners reduce shoreline armoring.
