  • Ragfinery, a local nonprofit that reuses textiles, announced plans to reopen in its new downtown location at 115 Unity St. with construction underway—its grand opening is planned before winter.  1170 KPUG

  • Karolina Lobrow and her husband, Ben Howe, run a meat-free brewpub in the Sunnyland neighborhood that serves European-style beers and hosts local events. They opened Otherlands Beer in June 2020 and celebrated their fifth anniversary last month—proving their new approach has grown into a stable business.  My Bellingham Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Donald Malone, a 61-year-old man from Custer, pleaded not guilty to killing a Bellingham accountant on Aug 15 — his trial will begin on Sept 29 and is expected to last four days.  My Bellingham Now
  • Donald Malone, a 61-year-old from Custer, turned himself in after fatally shooting accountant Vaughn Hagen—who had once offered to help clear Malone's late mother's garage—and pleaded not guilty, with his trial set to begin Sept. 29 and expected to last four days.  KISM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • WWU Geology Professor Doug Clark said Mount Baker’s 12 to 15 glaciers have retreated steadily over the last 150 years, including nearly a quarter of a mile in the past two decades, and he warned that this loss—driven by climate change—may affect Bellingham’s water supply. His research with student field surveys shows that shifting accumulation zones and reduced snow pack are key factors in the glaciers’ decline.  KISM
  • WWU geology professor Doug Clark said Mount Baker’s glaciers are shrinking fast because warmer weather and less snow cause them to recede. He added that the retreat of the Deming Glacier may soon lower water levels in local rivers—especially in the dry summer months.  My Bellingham Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The county auditor certified Whatcom County’s August primary results, reporting just over 31% voter turnout. Elizabeth Boyle and Maya Morales will face each other for District 2, former mayor Kyle Christensen will challenge Jessica Rienstra for District 3 after incumbent Tyler Byrd was ousted, and incumbent Ken Bell faces Carly James for the Port of Bellingham Commissioner District 2—both the rural library and South Whatcom Fire Authority levies passed, and ballots for the November general election will be mailed on Oct. 15.  KISM
  • Whatcom County Public Works received over $875,000 in federal funding to support Lummi Island ferry operations—work to replace cables at ferry terminals will cancel late-night trips this weekend with the last sailings at 10:10 p.m. from Gooseberry Point and service resuming at 7 a.m. the following mornings.  KISM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Recreational shellfish harvesting is closed from Bellingham Bay to Drayton Harbor after elevated levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning were found in shellfish. Health officials warn residents to check the Washington Shellfish Closure map or call the Department of Health Biotoxin Hotline (1-800-562-5632) before harvesting.  My Bellingham Now
