ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A new study by Construction Coverage shows Bellingham ranked as the fourth least affordable city in the country and the top among small cities based on Zillow’s Home Value Index and a 2023 Census survey — Mayor Kim Lund issued an order last November to boost housing opportunities. KISM
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Aug. 25, Cornerstone Christian School held an open house to mark the first day of school on Aug. 26 and unveiled a 7,000-square-foot expansion with four classrooms, a student lounge, extra restrooms, and a covered play area—photos from the event were shared. Lynden Tribune
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Bellingham City Council unanimously passed changes to temporary housing rules on Monday by removing the 24-hour shelter requirement and updating safety measures for minors and heating elements in tiny homes—these adjustments will take effect 15 days after a final reading at the next council meeting. Council member Hollie Huthman said the measures reflect growing community acceptance of tiny home shelters. KISM
- ➤ Bellingham City Council approved a resolution to explore a new sales tax—this tax will fund criminal justice services and the police while reducing the current $10 million budget deficit to $6 million and raising nearly $4 million in revenue for 2026; the council will decide in September. KAFE
- ➤ On August 25th, Bellingham City Council approved a Barkley Village plan that raises housing capacity from 1,116 to 3,000, improves bike and pedestrian paths, and preserves 40 acres of greenspace including wetlands — a result of a 7-year partnership with the Talbot Group. The new plan replaces old rules with area-wide regulations to enable faster and more coordinated development. City of Bellingham
- ➤ Today, the Bellingham City Council passed new changes to the temporary housing code that remove the 24-hour rule and update measures for minors and heating elements in tiny homes—these changes also eliminate limits on shelter occupancy and allow permits to be renewed without a cap. The new rules will go into effect 15 days after the final reading at the council’s next meeting if approved. KAFE

- ➤ The FDA and Whatcom County Health Department announced a recall for certain Deep-Brand frozen bean sprouts after salmonella was reported and recommended that consumers throw out the 1 lb. and 12 oz. bags and clean affected surfaces with hot, soapy water.
