COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bellingham’s newest tiny home community, North Haven, opened on Northwest Avenue on Tuesday with 19 new homes — plus 23 relocated units from Unity Village — and residents experiencing homelessness began moving in May. HomesNOW! plans another village next year to house more people.  KAFE

CRIME NEWS

  • Bellingham Police are investigating vandalism at Little Squalicum Pier after 911 callers reported hearing fireworks or gunshots over the weekend and a section of the pier was found damaged; city officials will set a repair timeline + urge visitors to exercise caution around the area.  KISM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hollie Huthman runs two local venues — The Shakedown and The Racket — that provide live rock shows and a pinball lounge where fans enjoy a mix of music and games. She also serves on City Council and her venue will celebrate its 15th anniversary in March.  KISM
  • The Langley Whale Center on Whidbey Island will open its interactive exhibit Toki’s Legacy on Saturday, Aug 30 to honor famed orca Tokitae, who spent 53 years in captivity before dying in 2023—visitors can explore her family, life, and artifacts from her 1970 capture in Penn Cove as admission remains free.  KAFE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bellingham City Council voted 5 to 1 on Monday night to reject a plan to annex 146 acres near Squalicum High School—ending a proposal that would have expanded city services to the Northern Heights neighborhood, home to roughly 700 residents and Whatcom Fire Station 12—due to budget shortfalls and a projected annual cost of over $200,000.  KISM
  • Residents in Whatcom County are urged to prepare for disasters in September by using the County’s NATURAL HAZARDS EXPLORER and signing up for alerts. Community Emergency Response Team training — in its 26th year and offered in places like Point Roberts, Lummi Island and soon in Chuckanut Bay — helps residents act as first responders when help may be delayed.  KISM
