COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Bellingham and HomesNOW! officially opened North Haven Tiny Home Village on Aug. 27 at 3300 Northwest Avenue, replacing Swift Haven and Unity Village with 48 tiny homes—23 relocated from Unity Village—and shared amenities near bus lines and city services. HomesNOW! operates the self-governing site as one of the city's steps to address homelessness.  City of Bellingham

CRIME NEWS

  • Two firefighters working on Bear Gulch Fire were arrested on Wednesday by federal Customs and Border Protection—working with the Bureau of Land Management—for a timecard fraud investigation and are now held in Bellingham.  KISM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire crews are working to contain three wildfires in the North Cascades—sparked by a lightning storm earlier this week. The Perry Fire burned about 50 acres near Ross Lake and led to trail and camp closures near Little Beaver Campground while the Thunder and Big Beaver Fires burned about two acres in rural Skagit County.  KISM
  • Crews resumed work at Padden Creek on a fish passage project as cleanup nears its end after over 670 gallons of diesel spilled earlier this month; tests showed sediment below detection levels and residents are urged to use caution on the reopened Interurban Trail at 10th Street due to remaining equipment.  KISM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ferndale City Council candidate Steven Potvin remains on the November ballot as the Whatcom County Canvassing Board ruled on Aug. 25 his voter registration shows his karate studio instead of his true residence—he plans to appeal while state law requires a court order to remove his name.  My Bellingham Now
  • Washington State Ferries will allow dogs on its ferries for the next six months; larger dogs must stay on the floor and small dogs should ride on laps or in carriers, with all dogs kept on a leash. Officials will review feedback in February 2026—when they will decide if this change becomes permanent—while the ferries expect nearly 400,000 riders through Labor Day.  KAFE

  • Today, the Mariners begin their road trip against the Cleveland Guardians at 4:10 p.m. and will play without Victor Robles, who faces a seven-game suspension, while college football returns with UW hosting Colorado State tomorrow night at 8 p.m.—the Cougs will face Idaho at 7 p.m. In soccer and WNBA news, the Sounders will host Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami on Sunday at 5:00 p.m., and the Reign face San Diego Wave tonight at 7:30 p.m.—the Storm rallied from a 21-point deficit against Minnesota last night and will meet Chicago Sky tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.  My Bellingham Now
