CRIME NEWS

  • A juvenile suspect was arrested following a drive-by shooting in Everson on Wednesday night after witnesses reported a silver SUV playing loud music along East Main Street and Greens Lane, and police later found a pistol with its serial number removed at a nearby residence—no one was hurt and there is no ongoing threat to the community.  KAFE

CULTURE NEWS

  • Three local festivals bring cultural fun to Whatcom County this weekend. The Bellingham Greek Festival runs through Sept. 7 at Saint Sophia Church, Ferndale’s Jam on the River begins today at Centennial Riverwalk Park with live music and food trucks, and the Lynden Whiskey Event on Saturday offers tastings and vendors — a local band show is set for Sunday.  KISM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Whatcom County's non‑seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased to 4.5% in July—up 1% from June and slightly lower than last July—while the state's seasonally adjusted rate remained steady at 4.5%.  KISM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Supreme Court will hear a lawsuit challenging Washington’s natural gas initiative passed last November as a coalition including King County and Seattle alleges that backers combined unrelated proposals to gain voter support—backers claim the initiative’s language is needed to protect access to natural gas.  My Bellingham Now
  • Today, Bellingham hosts Whatcom Water Week with events such as StoryWalks at Taylor Dock and water plant tours while the Tree Coupon Program offers up to a $100 discount per tree this fall—city crews will spruce up Lee Memorial Park on Sept. 6—7, seal roadway cracks on Hannegan Road Sept. 9—19, and conduct sewer work on Roeder Avenue Sept. 8—11 while urging residents to keep sidewalks clear. Local events also include a free First Friday celebration at Whatcom Museum tomorrow.  City of Bellingham
  • Whatcom County Superior Court will hold traveling court for the local water adjudication in the Nooksack basin at Lynden Municipal Court at 9 a.m. Sept. 8— the hearing will include a monthly update from the adjudication Steering Committee on suggested procedures.  Lynden Tribune
  • Residents in Lynden will learn about the water adjudication process when a traveling court gives a monthly update at Lynden Municipal Court on September 8 at 9 a.m. + Community members can then ask questions at the Lynden Senior Center from 1-3 p.m., with the state Department of Ecology leading the water rights claims for the Nooksack River Basin.  KISM

  • This weekend in Whatcom County, Bellingham will have a free Greek Festival at Saint Sophia Church with food and music until Sunday while Ferndale holds Jam on the River with live music and food trucks starting today. On Saturday, Lynden will host a Whiskey Event fundraiser with tastings and music—Bellingham’s Shakedown will feature local band Full Color Dream at 9 p.m.  KAFE
