- ➤ Local families can visit pumpkin patches this fall at sites like Bellewood Farms and Home Farms U-Pick and Events—Home Farms will reopen on Sept. 26 with u-pick pumpkins, maze walks and seasonal treats. KISM
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Skagit County woman, Yan Li, 54, was sentenced last month to 45 days of home confinement — with an $1800 fine after she purchased waterfowl carcasses and black bear parts from an undercover agent as part of an illegal trade valued in international markets for medicinal use. KAFE
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A coalition of environmental groups asked Whatcom County to order a full Environmental Impact Statement on new projects at AltaGas’s Ferndale Terminal amid rising vessel traffic in the Salish Sea that increases risk for endangered orcas–the public comment period will end on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. KAFE
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Faber Construction is asking to extend work hours overnight at the Padden Creek fish passage project so it can complete in-water work before the Sept. 30 regulatory deadline—the project has faced delays due to fuel spills. A noise ordinance approved by the Public Works and Natural Resources Committee will be brought before the City Council on Monday night for final approval. KAFE
- ➤ Whatcom Fire District 7 is placing a levy lid lift measure on the November ballot to restore its funding and keep fire stations open 24 hours with updated equipment—actions aimed at improving response times amid rising call volumes and aging infrastructure. - ➤ City of Bellingham Public Works Department is removing dead trees along Lakeway Drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays starting this week; the work is expected to finish within three weeks—medians will then be cleaned and replanted later this fall. KAFE
