COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Amy Cloud from the Sheriff's Office Division of Emergency Management advises locals to prepare for emergencies by storing a box under the bed with items like sturdy shoes, work gloves, a flashlight, a whistle and tape. The tip is part of the Prepare in a Year series offered during Emergency Preparedness Month and warns that such measures are key for events like flooding—wildfires.  KISM
  • Lynden Safeway will host a food drive for Project Hope Food Bank on Wednesday, Sept. 24—part of the Seattle Seahawks' Impacting 50 Communities initiative celebrating its 50th anniversary. Store Manager Megan Gregarek said the store chose Project Hope to support local families.  Lynden Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Small cities including Sumas, Everson, Nooksack, Birch Bay and Columbia Valley met with the Whatcom County Planning Commission on September 11 to discuss Urban Growth Areas. Due to a typo in the land capacity analysis—Blaine requested to appear before the commission on October 9.  Lynden Tribune
  • Bellingham will start a three-year $19 million cleanup and park project this fall when IMCO General Construction begins removing contaminated waste from two industrial sites at Cornwall Beach Park+ the project is partly funded by state grants while the city and Port of Bellingham cover the rest, paving the way for the new Salish Landing Park with parking, trails and a boat launch.  KAFE

HEALTH NEWS

  • Unionized healthcare workers ratified a new contract at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center on Aug. 15 after a five-day strike and 10 months of stalled negotiations—gaining yearly pay raises totaling 14% to nearly 34% over four years. The deal also includes improved benefits, enhanced workplace protections and stronger union rights amid community support.  KAFE

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Public comment is now open on a proposed 4-story, 36-unit apartment project in downtown Bellingham—AVT Consulting plans to build on the former dental office site at 1101 N. Forest St with improved parking and a wider sidewalk while residents submit feedback on environmental concerns until October 2.  KISM

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Mariners begin a crucial three-game series against the Astros in Houston tonight — top pitchers Bryan Woo and Hunter Brown will face off while the Seattle Storm ended their season last night by a one-point margin and the Seahawks prepare to host the Saints on Sunday at 1:00 p.m on KPUG. Bellingham High lost to Anacortes 68 to 0 at Civic Stadium, and Blaine High’s Friday Night Lights is live today as the county looks ahead to the Huskies versus Cougs Apple Cup clash tomorrow.  KISM
