Good morning, Bellingham. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 23rd of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A helicopter took part in routine flight training west of Joint Base Lewis-McChord as a Vietnam veteran now leads the Whatcom County Community Emergency Response Team and a memorial service is set for Sunday at the state capitol’s West Campus starting at 1 p.m. Local agencies will begin monthly law enforcement data reports after a governor-signed bill while old prescription drop-offs, a firefighters’ rope rescue, a charity event that raised nearly $400,000 for Bellingham Food Bank, and national Drug Trafficking Awards for 14 task forces underscore ongoing service—each effort reinforces community dedication.  My Bellingham Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state Department of Agriculture recalled seven-pound bags of Signature Pet Care Songbird Blend Wild Bird Food sold at Haggen & Safeway & Albertsons after finding invasive palmer amaranth seeds that can grow over 10 feet tall and harm crops and native habitats. Customers who purchased the product may return it for a refund and must remove any remaining seeds from feeders to prevent further spread.  KAFE

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Sept 18, Western United recalled Kirkland’s Fresh Ahi Wasabi Poke sold at Costco—after potential Listeria contamination in the green onions was found—and advised customers to discard the item and call Costco for a refund.  KAFE
  • The Food and Drug Administration issued a recall for tens of thousands of bags of shrimp sold by Aquastar Corp at Fred Meyer and QFC between June 12 and September 17—tests found the shrimp may contain the radioactive substance Cesium-137 and customers are urged to return them for a full refund or throw them out. The recalled products include Aquastar’s Raw Peeled Tail-on Shrimp Skewers and two Kroger brands, since repeated exposure to Cesium-137 may raise the risk of cancer.  My Bellingham Now
